Softswitch Technology
Lutron’s patented Softswitch technology utilizes three components to create an arc-less circuit: a mechanically held relay (the primary component of other relays), an electronically held relay, and a solid-state triac. A signal closes (or turns on) the electronically held relay. Once this relay is closed, the triac energizes the load. Next, the mechanical relay closes, passing current through contacts back to the electronically held relay and triac, eliminating heat and inefficiency for 10 line cycles until the first relay opens again.
