How Long Should You Keep Security Footage? A Guide to Video Retention

Ask ten business owners how long their security cameras keep footage before it's gone, and most won't know the answer. It's one of those settings that gets left on whatever the installer configured years ago — until the day someone needs footage from six weeks back and finds out it was overwritten six days ago.
Why retention length matters more than people think
Video retention is simply how long footage stays available before new recordings overwrite it. Set it too short, and you lose evidence of a theft, a slip-and-fall, or a disputed delivery before anyone even knows to go looking for it. Set it too long on storage that isn't built to scale, and you're either paying for drives you don't need or living with picture quality dialed down to stretch capacity further.
What actually drives the right retention window
There's no single right number — the right retention period depends on a few concrete factors:
- How fast incidents get reported. A retail theft usually surfaces within days. A liability claim or an insurance dispute can surface weeks or months later.
- Insurance and lease requirements. Some commercial leases and insurance policies specify a minimum retention period in writing — worth checking before assuming 30 days is enough.
- Camera count and resolution. More cameras and higher resolution eat storage faster, which is usually what pushes businesses toward shorter retention than they'd actually like.
- How many sites you're responsible for. A single location can get away with a simpler setup. Multiple sites make a consistent retention policy — and the storage to back it — much harder to manage by hand.
The retention problem with on-premise storage
Traditional NVR storage ties your retention window to whatever drives are physically sitting in the box. Want to stretch retention from 30 days to 90? That usually means swapping in bigger drives, which means a truck roll, which means someone remembering to do it before the old drives are already full. (Our NVR buying guide covers what to look for if on-premise recording is still the right call for part of your setup.) It works, but it isn't flexible, and retention is rarely the first thing anyone remembers to budget for until it's too late.
Where cloud retention changes the math
Silarius Cloud separates retention from hardware entirely. Footage sits on AWS-backed infrastructure with a 99.99% uptime SLA and AES-256 encryption at rest and in transit, and you choose a retention window — 7, 14, 30, 60, or 90 days — per camera, instead of being locked into whatever a drive's capacity happens to allow. Need longer retention on your loading dock cameras than your break room? Set it per camera and move on, no new hardware required.
It also connects to the cameras, NVRs, DVRs and analog systems you already have over ONVIF or RTSP — no rip-and-replace, whatever brand your existing hardware happens to be. If you're building a system from scratch, Silarius's own cameras, NVRs, and switches are designed to work with it from day one, including AI analytics like motion, person, vehicle, face, and license plate recognition layered on top of whatever retention window you choose.
A simple way to decide
- Retail and hospitality: 30 days covers most disputes and loss-prevention cases without carrying unnecessary cost.
- Multi-site operations: standardize retention across every location from one dashboard, rather than whatever each site's NVR happens to support.
- Regulated or higher-liability environments: 60–90 days gives more room for claims, audits, or investigations that surface later.
- Anywhere budget is tight: start at 7–14 days and scale up only where it's actually needed, instead of over-provisioning every camera the same way.
Getting started
If you're not sure what your current system is even set to, that's the first thing worth checking — a lot of retention problems only get discovered after it's too late to matter. See how Silarius Cloud handles retention for your business.
