Frequently asked questions
Why do I need a Gateway?
It is the easiest, fastest and safest way to connect cameras you already own to the cloud. It skips port forwarding and sends video through an encrypted tunnel, and if your ISP changes your IP address the Gateway reconnects on its own. Silarius X cameras do not need one: they connect straight to the cloud.
Which cameras work with the Gateway?
ONVIF IP cameras from any manufacturer. Silarius Cloud connects the cameras themselves, not NVRs or DVRs. Make sure the ONVIF user is enabled on each camera so the Gateway can see it.
Do the cameras need to be connected to the cloud too?
No. The Gateway and the cameras only need to be on the same network, with the basic camera settings done (password, clock, image). If you have a firewall, allow outbound traffic from the Gateway on port 443. Camera traffic to and from the internet can stay blocked.
How does it find the cameras?
It uses ONVIF discovery, so most cameras appear automatically. If one does not, it can be added manually by IP address and port.
How long does setup take?
The Gateway comes with its software installed and starts discovering cameras about 2 minutes after it is powered on. With cameras already installed, a technician is typically done in 15 to 20 minutes. Each camera is added with one click and gets a registration code for Silarius Cloud.
How many cameras can one Gateway connect?
It depends on resolution and your internet upload, which is usually the limit. As a guide for the Silarius Gateway: 30 to 40 cameras at 720p, 20 to 25 at about 1 Mbps each, and 8 to 10 4K cameras at 3 to 4 Mbps. The Gateway V2 cuts bandwidth by up to 80% and handles up to 200 cameras. Larger sites can use several Gateways on one account.
Which Gateway should I choose?
The Silarius Gateway suits most businesses with a standard internet connection. Choose the Gateway V2 for large or complex sites, weak or cellular connections, mobile surveillance trailers, 4K cameras, or when video must keep recording during internet outages.
Can I run a video wall on site without extra cloud usage?
Yes. Both the Silarius Gateway and the Gateway V2 can now stream video locally to a video wall. The wall gets its video from the Gateway over your own network instead of through the cloud, which helps avoid additional cloud video usage fees. Cloud recording, alerts and remote viewing keep working as usual.
What if the Gateway fails?
Its camera settings can be backed up and restored automatically, including onto a new Gateway, so cameras come back without being added again.
