Choose a hard drive size for your NVR

Work out how many terabytes you need from the number of cameras, their resolution and the days of video you want to keep.

Applies to: Silarius NVRs with drive options: SIL-NVR4CHPOE, SIL-NVR9CH, SIL-NVR8CHWIFI, SIL-NVR4K16, SIL-NVR16CHPOE, SIL-XVR4CH, SIL-4CHNVRWIFI8MPKIT, SIL-NVRAI16, SIL-NVRS32C4K, SIL-NVRS64C4K.

  1. Count your cameras

Note how many cameras record to the NVR and their resolution (5MP or 8MP / 4K).

  2. Decide how many days to keep

Choose how many days of video you want before the oldest video is recorded over, for example 14, 30 or 90 days.

  3. Multiply

With H.265 and recording around the clock, plan 32.4 GB a day for each 5MP camera and 64.8 GB a day for each 8MP camera. Cameras × GB per day × days = GB needed (1 TB = 1,000 GB). The calculator below does it for you. These are the same figures our planners use.

  4. Pick the next size up

Choose the drive size at or above the result. Recording only on motion uses less space, so the figure is on the safe side.

  5. Check the drive bays

Most Silarius NVRs take one drive, 2 to 24TB. SIL-NVRAI16 and SIL-NVRS32C4K take two drives, up to 48TB. SIL-NVRS64C4K takes up to eight drives, up to 192TB.

  6. Order the NVR with the drive

Pick the drive on the NVR's product page in NVRs and recorders. The model number then carries the size, for example SIL-NVR16CHPOE8 for SIL-NVR16CHPOE with 8TB.

Hard drive calculator

7.8 TBA single 8TB drive covers it.

32.4 GB a day per 5MP camera and 64.8 GB a day per 8MP camera, H.265, recording around the clock. 1 TB = 1,000 GB.
