By the end you will know what the common camera and network words mean, so the other guides are easy to follow.

IP camera
A security camera that plugs into your network, like a computer does. Silarius Cloud works with IP cameras only.
ONVIF
A common language that most IP cameras speak. It lets Silarius Cloud find a camera and change its settings, no matter who made it.
Silarius X camera
A Silarius camera made for plug and play. It connects straight to Silarius Cloud with no recorder and no gateway.
Silarius Gateway
A small box on your network that finds the cameras you already own and connects them safely to Silarius Cloud.
NVR and DVR
Recorder boxes that store video on site. An NVR records IP cameras. A DVR records older analog cameras. Their cameras can connect to Silarius Cloud through the Silarius Gateway.
Layout
A screen that shows several cameras at once, in a grid.
Event
Something a camera noticed, like motion or a person crossing a line. Events work like bookmarks in your video.
Clip
A short piece of recorded video that you save, download or share.
Library
The place in the web app where saved clips are kept.
Recording (archive)
All the video saved in the cloud from a camera. Silarius Cloud records all the time.
Retention
How many days your video is kept before it is removed.
Bandwidth
How much data moves over your internet each second. More cameras and higher quality use more.
Upload speed
How fast your internet can send data out. Your cameras need it to send video to the cloud.
Router
The box that connects your building's network to the internet.
IP address
A device's number on a network, like a house number. A static IP is one that never changes.
Port
A numbered door on a device or router that data goes through. Secure websites use port 443.
Port forwarding
A router rule that opens a door so the internet can reach one device inside your network. Silarius X cameras and the Silarius Gateway don't need it.
DNS
The internet's phone book. It turns names into IP addresses. Cameras need it to find the cloud.
MAC address
A unique hardware ID built into every network device.
Registration code
A code that tells Silarius Cloud exactly which camera is which, so it can connect it.
Encrypted tunnel
A private, locked path over the internet. Others can't read what goes through it.
Firmware
The software built into a camera or other device. Updates fix problems and add features.
Resolution
How sharp the picture is. Higher resolution shows more detail but uses more data.
Frame rate (FPS)
How many pictures a camera takes each second. More frames make movement smoother but use more data.
Bitrate
How much data a camera sends each second. Higher bitrate usually means a better picture and more storage.
H.264
A common way to squeeze video so it takes less space. Many IP cameras use it.
RTSP
A common way for cameras to send live video over a network.
Smart analytics
Computer smarts in the cloud that spot people, cars and other objects. They help cut out false alerts.
Motion detection
When a camera notices that something in the picture moved.
Mask
An area you mark on the camera picture. Motion detection works inside it and is off everywhere else.
Alert
A message by email or phone push that tells you something happened, like motion or a camera going offline.
Webhook
An automatic message Silarius Cloud can send to another system when something happens.
Role
A group of cameras plus what people may do with them. You give roles to users to control their access.
Timelapse
A fast-forward movie that squeezes a long time, like a whole day, into a short video.
PTZ
Pan, tilt, zoom. A camera you can move left and right, up and down, and zoom in or out.
Fisheye
A camera with a round, 360-degree view. Dewarping flattens its picture so it is easier to watch.
Two-factor sign-in
A second step when you sign in: a 6-digit code from an app on your phone, on top of your password.
