Turn and zoom a PTZ camera

Move a PTZ camera from the web app, and fix it when the PTZ button is missing.

5 min Intermediate

By the end you will move a PTZ camera from your computer. PTZ means Pan (turn left and right), Tilt (up and down) and Zoom. You will also know why the PTZ button might not show.

What you need

  • You are signed in to the Silarius Cloud web app
  • A PTZ camera
  • Your user role allows PTZ

Be careful with the two house icons. The plain house sends the camera home. The house with a down arrow saves where the camera is now as the NEW home spot.

Step by step

  1. Open the camera

Open Cameras and click the PTZ tab. Click your camera. Make sure it shows live video.

  2. Open the PTZ controls

Move your mouse over the video. Click the PTZ button on the camera toolbar. The PTZ controls open.

  3. Pick a mode

Choose Relative or Continuous. See below for the difference.

  4. Move and zoom

Use the arrows or joystick to move. Use zoom to get closer or farther. Change the speed to move faster or slower.

  5. Go back home

Click the Home icon (a little house) to send the camera back to its home spot.

Relative or Continuous?

  • Relative: each click moves the camera a set amount. A higher speed moves it farther with each click. Good for small, careful moves.
  • Continuous: the camera keeps moving the way you push the joystick. Push closer to the edge to move faster.

Zoom works the same in both modes. It has its own speed control.

How fast the camera can really move depends on the camera itself.

The PTZ button is missing

Here is what to check:

  • Your role: your user role may not allow PTZ. An owner or admin can add PTZ to your role in Silarius Cloud Admin.
  • The camera's user account: the camera should be added to Silarius Cloud with a user from the camera's own web page that has full admin rights. A user with fewer rights can stop PTZ from working. Some cameras let you name a user "admin" but give it fewer rights, so check the rights, not just the name.
  • The camera itself: PTZ must work over ONVIF. ONVIF is a common language many cameras use. Some cameras can move, but not over ONVIF. Then the PTZ button won't show.

Common questions

I checked all of this and PTZ still doesn't work. What now?
