Why Silarius Cloud uses H.264 (not H.265)

What are H.264 and H.265?

They are two ways to pack (compress) video so it is smaller. They are called codecs.

• H.264 came out in 2003. Almost every device can play it.
• H.265 came out in 2013. It can make files smaller, but fewer devices play it, and it takes more computer power.

Why Silarius Cloud uses H.264

Silarius Cloud plays video right in your web browser. Browsers play H.264 on their own. They don't play H.265 on their own. You would need extra add-ons or software.

H.264 also needs much less computer power. That matters when you watch many cameras at once. And in real scenes with lots of motion, H.265 often saves very little internet.

In short:

• H.265 needs more computer power.
• In real life, it saves little internet.
• H.264 plays on almost every device, with nothing to install.

What happens with my camera

For most cameras, Silarius Cloud switches the stream to H.264 for you. This happens when you pick the camera's stream on the Quality tab in the camera settings.

Some cameras can't be switched this way. Then you change the camera to H.264 yourself, on the camera's own web page.

Signs the camera is still sending H.265

In the camera settings in Silarius Cloud Admin, look under the camera name. If HTTP shows connected in green but Video shows offline in red, the camera may still be sending H.265. (It could also be something else.)

Open the camera's own web page from the Troubleshooting tab. Set the video stream to H.264 and save.
