Search one part of the picture and count people

Draw an area on a camera picture to find what passed through it, see people counts, and view heatmaps.

6 min Intermediate

By the end you will draw an area on a camera picture, like a doorway. You will see everything that passed through it, count people, and see where activity is busiest.

What you need

  • You are signed in to the Silarius Cloud web app
  • A camera with object detection (the system spotting people, cars and other things) turned on

Step by step

  1. Open the area search

Move your mouse over the camera. Click the Area search button on the camera toolbar. With no area drawn, you see people counts for the whole picture and every object found.

  2. Draw an area

Pick the rectangle tool (R) and click two corners. Or pick the free-draw tool (A) and click once for each corner of any shape. A list of objects found in that area shows.

  3. Draw more areas (optional)

Right-click on the picture and pick an area type. Or press R or A again.

  4. Pick object types

Click the Select object line. Choose which objects to show, like people or vehicles.

  5. Filter by date, color and confidence

Click Today or Yesterday, or click the date to open the calendar. Pick colors if you like. Move the confidence slider to show surer or more results.

  6. Pick a time on the chart

Click and drag across the people counting chart. The list only shows that time.

  7. Watch a result

Click an event in the list to watch it. Or drag it into any box of your layout.

  8. Leave area search

Click the exit search mode button. Or close the results panel.

What is confidence?

When the system spots something, it gives a confidence score. That is how sure it is that the thing is a person, a car, and so on. The percent shows at the top of the box around the object.

A clear person against a plain wall gets a high score. A shape that only looks a bit like a person gets a low score.

  • Too many wrong results? Move the confidence up.
  • Missing something you know was there? Move it down.

Heatmaps

A heatmap colors the busiest spots. Show it for the whole picture, for just your drawn areas, or hide it.

With two or more areas drawn, choose the heatmap for selected areas. You can compare which area gets more foot traffic. A shop can use this to decide where to put products or signs.

The Heatmap menu in the top bar also shows busy areas. It shows for accounts with object detection on at least one camera.

Good to know

  • Only objects that move are listed. Things that stand still, like parked cars, are not saved as events.
  • Objects are only sorted from the time object detection was turned on. Older video can't be searched this way, even if it is still recorded.
  • Detection rules must be set up in Silarius Cloud Admin for each kind of object. If they aren't, that kind won't show any results.
  • The results list can stick to any edge of the screen, or float anywhere.
  • Each result has a close-up picture. For people, it shows more of the area around them.

Area search shortcuts
