Common questions
Does Silarius Cloud work with any camera?
It works with IP cameras. You can use your own existing cameras, any model, by ONVIF or through the Silarius Gateway. Silarius X cameras connect straight to the cloud.
Can I add my NVR or DVR?
Yes. Connect the NVR or DVR to the Silarius Gateway, and each camera on it is added on its own. See Connect your NVR or DVR.
Does it work with my analog cameras?
Yes, through their DVR. If your DVR supports ONVIF or RTSP, connect it through the Silarius Gateway and each analog camera is added on its own. See Connect your NVR or DVR.
What is a Silarius X camera?
It is a Silarius plug-and-play camera. It connects straight to the cloud with no recorder and no gateway.
Do I need a Silarius Gateway?
Not for Silarius X cameras. For your own existing IP cameras, the Silarius Gateway is the easiest and safest way to connect them.
How many cameras can one Silarius Gateway handle?
Up to 50, depending on how much video each camera sends. Your network speed is usually the real limit.
Do I need to set up port forwarding?
Not with Silarius X cameras or the Silarius Gateway. They connect out through an encrypted tunnel, so no ports need to be opened.
What is the most secure way to connect a camera?
Silarius X cameras (plug and play), or the Silarius Gateway for existing cameras. Both send video through an encrypted tunnel with no open ports.
What is the most reliable way to connect a camera?
The same: plug and play with Silarius X cameras, or the Silarius Gateway. You don't need to open ports or set up port forwarding rules.
Is storing my video in the cloud secure?
Yes. Video is encrypted while it travels and while it is stored, with a major cloud data center provider.
Is my video encrypted?
Yes. Traffic is encrypted with TLS, and stored video is encrypted with AES-256.
Is two-factor sign-in available?
Yes. You can add a second check, like a code, on top of your password.
Can we sign in with our company accounts?
Yes. Your company sign-in (SAML 2.0 single sign-on) and OpenID Connect are supported.
Where is my video stored?
With a major cloud data center provider, in its US East region by default.
Our rules say data must stay in our country. Is that possible?
Sometimes, mostly for very large projects. Tell Silarius early: request a quote or email us.
Who can see the clips I save?
Anyone whose role lets them see that camera. Clips belong to the camera, not to the person who made them.
Do I need to install software to watch my cameras?
No. The web app runs in a modern web browser. There is also the Silarius Cloud mobile app.
What devices does it run on?
Any computer that can run a modern web browser. There are also iOS and Android apps. Get them from our sign-in page.
How do I sign in?
Go to silariussecurity.com/login and click Log in to Silarius Cloud.
Can I watch 32 or more cameras at once?
Yes. Video walls and many monitors are supported. For 32 or more streams, use a computer with a dedicated graphics card, at least 16 GB of memory and a strong processor.
Is there a limit on how many cameras I can add?
No. There is no limit on the number of cameras.
How many users can I add?
As many as you like. You can limit each user to certain cameras and actions.
Can owners and guards watch different things?
Yes. You set permissions for each user. For example, owners can view, share and edit cameras, while guards can only view.
Can I watch several locations at the same time?
Yes. Everyone with permission can watch all the locations they have access to at once.
Can I have a separate account for each location?
Yes, there are a few ways to set this up. Contact Silarius to find the best one: email us.
Can I put cameras into groups?
Yes. There is no limit on groups or cameras per group. One camera can be in many groups.
Is live video fast?
Yes. Silarius Cloud supports low-delay live video in your browser.
Can I choose how long video is kept?
Yes. Options range from live only to months of storage. You can also record all the time or only on events. For plans, contact Silarius: request a quote or email us.
What happens to old video if I change a camera's plan?
If the new plan keeps video longer, all your old video stays. If it keeps video for fewer days, video older than the new limit is deleted.
What happens when I disable a camera?
Live view and new recording stop. Saved video, events, clips and analytics results stay until they age out. Disabling can be undone.
Does a disabled camera still cost money?
A disabled camera stays on your account with its saved video. For billing questions, contact Silarius: request a quote or email us.
What happens when I delete a camera?
Everything for that camera is deleted for good: video, clips, shared links and events. It can't be undone.
Do I get new features automatically?
Yes. New web and mobile features arrive for everyone.
Are logs kept?
Yes. Many logs are kept to help with upkeep, troubleshooting and security.
How much upload speed does a camera need?
Roughly 0.5 Mbps for 720p, 1 Mbps for 1080p, 2.5 Mbps for 4 MP and 3.5 Mbps for 4K. See How much internet speed your cameras need.
Why does it say upload speed and not download?
Cameras send video up to the cloud. That uses your upload speed, which is often much lower than download.
How can I use less internet?
Lower the frame rate, raise compression, and only use smart codecs after testing. See Use less internet.
Should I set my camera to 1 FPS to save data?
Usually not. It often saves little and can cause big bursts. 3 or 5 FPS is usually a better balance.
Why does my camera sometimes show double its speed?
Cameras send a big full picture every few seconds. That causes short spikes. If the number drops back down, it's normal.
Can I use cellular or satellite internet?
Yes, if the upload speed is high enough and there are no blackouts, slow-downs or limits on heavy use. Old-style satellite can have long delays.
Will I lose video if the internet goes down?
The cloud can't record while the internet is down. Use an SD card in the camera, or local recording on the Silarius Gateway, as a backup.
Does missing video upload by itself when the internet comes back?
No. Recovery is done in a controlled way so it doesn't flood your internet.
Should I turn on automatic SD card recovery?
We don't recommend it. It often fails and can make things worse. Use a manual SD card backup or the Silarius Gateway instead.
Should I run my cameras over a VPN?
No. Use a VPN only for short admin jobs. Running cameras over one all the time can make them less reliable.
Why can't I use H.265?
Browsers play H.264 on their own but not H.265. Silarius Cloud converts most cameras to H.264 for you. For others, set H.264 on the camera.
Live video won't play at work. Why?
A strict firewall on your network may be blocking it. Silarius support will send you the list of addresses to allow.
My camera says offline. What first?
Open its Troubleshooting tab in Silarius Cloud Admin and wait up to 2 minutes for the check. Then follow the fix for the message.
Why does it say "ONVIF Authentication Failed"?
The user name or password doesn't match the camera's ONVIF user. Some cameras need a separate ONVIF user.
Can I use Silarius Cloud on a very big site?
Yes. Big sites need a lot of upload speed, so check with your internet company first. See How much internet speed your cameras need.
Can I add a camera by its RTSP video link?
Yes, as a Generic Device. It needs port forwarding, so the Silarius Gateway is safer. See Add a camera by its video link.
Does it work with PTZ cameras?
Yes. You can turn and zoom PTZ cameras from the web app and the mobile app. See Turn and zoom a PTZ camera.
Can I put a camera on my website?
Yes, with a widget. Widgets cost extra and use data each time someone watches, so talk to Silarius first. See Put a live camera on your website.
Can I talk through my camera?
Yes, if the camera has a speaker. See Talk through your camera.
Do white-label cameras get every feature?
Not always. Two cameras can look the same but run different software. Before a big job, check the exact model and firmware, and test the features you need on that camera. Silarius X cameras are tested with Silarius Cloud.
Do you have an API for developers?
Yes. Silarius Cloud has an API, so your own software can add cameras, read events and more. Contact Silarius to get started: email us.
